the timebox + no-skip principle

"You've got to do it every day. That's the hard part. But, it does get easier."  My first priority will be timeboxing. I'm about 10 minutes behind right now but that's not bad all things considered.  My second priority will be making sure I do each pursuit every day, even if it's just a little bit. That way nothing gets backburnered. But, the timeboxes are the first priority, so if I'd have to violate a timebox, then I will have to skip a pursuit for the day. But this shouldn't be ideal.  This means I'll have to clamp down on my schedule a lot which is a good thing anyway.

You need rest whether you think you deserve it or not

This is crucial, I think.  I was raised with a mentality of "if you're not done, you need to keep working on it until you are, and you can take a break when you're done". This is a very workaholic way of looking at things.  The problem with this mentality is that it causes things to stretch to fill all the time you have available. If you say "I can't eat dinner until I've finished my homework", you might think that you gave yourself a super productive incentive to finish. But instead, you just guaranteed that you will complete your assignment very inefficiently. You will not finish it until 10 PM because of your declining energy, and then you will devour a bunch of crap from the vending machine. This is how I got fat in undergrad. Do NOT do this.  Whereas if you stop at 6 no matter what and get dinner, then you'll have energy again. You will finish your assignment with sufficient time and you'll probably do better on it, too. SNOW IN MAY AAAAUUGH

Image
This has been a FREEZING COLD spring and now we have snow predicted for THE MONTH OF MAY. May and June are supposed to be the nice months. Guess it's only June. This is like the third time I've thought "great, this is the last cold spell" and I was wrong. I hate living here.  That's the thing about winter. It creeps into October and usually lasts until April...or May now. This is why I love the 90-degree days in June, July, and August. I was really hoping it would warm up early for extra pool days like it did last year. I want my Memorial Day Weekend water park trips.

Language models are way too addicting

This is from the  TextSynth Playground, which uses GPT-J.   My input:  Once upon a time there was a brilliant man by the name of Howard Ketcher McFletcher III. Now Howard loved dragons, so he would always go to Target and steal as much dragon merch as he could from the small children in the toy aisles. One day he was about to shoplift some more toys when he heard a voice calling to him from the Easter candy aisle. Grabbing his toys and shoving aside 5 kids, he walked towards the Easter aisle. He grabbed a few Reese's peanut butter eggs and then continued to follow the voice.  "Howard," said the voice, "Look in between the televisions and you shall finally See."  Howard looked between the televisions, and his black eyes widened. There was a portal to a magical dragon land.

Biannual triage + activity vacation

For lots of students, the week before finals is actually worse than finals week itself, because that's when all your big projects are due. In fact, this semester, I am in a pretty good position to have everything done by Friday, the first day of finals. Once that's over, I'll have a quick break and then slam back into the large amounts of personal work I need to get done this spring and summer.  It will be way less stressful though, because it'll be my own deadlines.  At this point in the semester, it's always pretty safe to do a major triage. Cal Newport talks about an "activity vacation" that starts at the beginning of the semester, which I don't quite follow. I just do it for a week at the end of the semester. This means I drop every activity that is not directly related to my classes, with one exception: I make sure to work out every day in some form, and I do at least try  to write and practice art, but I do not care much if I miss it. Because I w
