Summer Report: Late May and Memorial Day Weekend through Summer Solstice

I hate the winter Can't stand the cold... But when the heat comes, something takes a hold.  It's important to record the fun things you've done, especially during your favorite time of the year. Thus, here is a recounting of how I've spent the summer so far.  The Friday before Memorial Day was a company holiday, so I had the day off. I went to the Provo Recreation Center's outdoor water slides in order to celebrate the beginning of the season. On Saturday, I went to Lagoon (though it was super crowded so I didn't ride much) for a few hours, then headed over to Cherry Hill, which was much less crowded and consequently quite refreshing. That night, we watched A Quiet Place Part 2. On Sunday, I did my traditional afternoon walk around Riverwoods, and Monday was a wild card -- a group of us ended up going to Park City where I got my 82nd coaster credit on the Mountain Coaster.  As of late, it's been GLORIOUSLY hot. I love it. I've been spending so much time

Unpopular opinion: keep your dogs on a leash

This post brought to you by Running and Walking at the Park Gang.  It should be a common, well-known fact that dogs should only be allowed off-leash at dog parks, or in private residences. This is in accordance with leash laws. Public parks are PEOPLE parks, not dog parks. Of course you can bring you dog to a regular park, but it NEEDS to be kept on a leash. Check this out for the city of Orem:  https://orem.org/animal-control/ It is worse running in the neighborhood: not only will you still encounter off-leash dogs, but they will also be territorial. The only place to avoid this is on bike paths.  I do 80% or so of my running on grass, due to my knees, while the other 20% or so is fine on pavement (asphalt only, no concrete). So I have to run at the park. Besides, I like visiting cool parks, and I have no problem seeing leashed dogs.  But when your dog is running off leash in the middle of the park — which is against the leash laws in our area — it screws up my entire workout. This ha

The problem with my apartment's pool (and small apartment pools in general)

I love my apartment complex. It also has a pretty decent pool. It is very aesthetic and I love the colors. While unemployed last summer, I swam almost every morning in that pool at around 9-9:15 AM. Sometimes I would work out, other times simply float and be a kid again.  However, there are two problems with this pool. One, it doesn't open until 9 AM every morning, which is when I need to start working now that I have an internship. And two, it is very small.  And so whenever I try to go swimming there, there are always parents and kids, or random groups of teenagers or college kids, swimming. I can't go to the one lap lane to work out, because there's no dividing line for it, so the kids are just playing in it. Even though it's a pool for everyone in the complex, it feels SUPER AWKWARD to go over there, whether it be families with kids or groups of college students, when all I want to do is go for a quick swim. (Seriously, I only need 10 minutes, I just want to get in

The key to lowering my stress

This is exactly what I needed to read this morning. To focus on the work itself, not whether or not people will think you’re good. Found in a Forbes article ( link ):   “Learn to stop self imposing stress by building your own self-confidence rather than seeking other’s approval,” says Melnick. If you’re too caught up in others’ perceptions of you, which you can’t control, you become stressed out by the minutia or participate in avoidance behaviors like procrastination. Ironically, once you shift your focus from others’ perception of your work to the work itself, you’re more likely to impress them.

Stowaway is finished

No images yet, until it's released to the public. But it has been finished!  Overall, I enjoyed working on this film. However, my poor time management (ever the bane of my existence) meant that I did not contribute as much as I would have liked, similar to Death and Delila (third time's the charm, I hope?). I am very happy with how the final film turned out, though. And it was finished in a pretty timely manner, too.  I am going to adjust my approach to the film in the fall, with the aim of becoming a significant contributor instead of just that one guy who shows up to dailies. I have always wanted to do this, but it has not been easy for me.  FIRST, I must strengthen my foundation in art this summer: both in 2D and in 3D. In previous summers, I've been too obsessed with learning everything sequentially and piece-by-piece, which meant I did not focus sufficiently on 3D.  SECOND, I must increase my time management skills, and THIRD, I must increase my programming skills.  At

Song analysis: "All My Favorite Songs" by Weezer

Image
Yes indeed, it's time for another self-indulgent song analysis! :D  Here is the link to the lyrics on Genius. I don't know much about Weezer or the background of this song. But, the lyrics really resonate with me.  I very much feel this. Almost all of my favorite songs are sad. Slow, sometimes, too. Example: On the Wing by Owl City is a song about a beautiful fantasy that isn’t real. Humans can’t fly, simply put, not without the aid of machinery, and as Adam admits in the song, the girl in the song is simply a decoy. Like everything else in the scene, she exists only in the dream. This is a sad song.  Similarly, when upset we are most likely to act out around the people we know and love. Why? Because we’re comfortable around them. Our guard is down. But it sucks, because we end up hurting the people that we love the most.  You know what feels good? Giving into impulses and desires. Eating a ton of junk food, blowing off responsibility. But everything that feels so good is bad,

Re-evaluating with my carnival coaster credits [82 total coasters]

As of Monday, I have ridden 77 different permanent coasters. My most recent credit, which I obtained on Monday, was the Mountain Coaster in Park City, UT. I'm also not currently counting the Disk-O at Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, but that may change later.  But I have forgotten to count carnival coasters, which boosts my count somewhat. Here are the ones that I can remember.  Ventura County Fair: Dragon Wagon Ventura County Fair: Backdraft Coaster Ventura County Fair: Pole Position Ventura County Fair: Wacky Worm (Probably)  City of Fun Carnival: Orient Express (This one is pain and suffering)  A lot of people don't count Dragon Wagons, but I will. Because that is my earliest memory of being on a coaster. Though I may be mixing it up with Jaguar at Knott's, but I don't think so.  I am sure there are more, but these are unfortunately the only ones I can remember, so they are the ones I will count. To be completely honest, I can't even remember if I've been on a Wa
