Fixing my clicky fan
I am not handy. I enjoy working with technology, and I can build computers (and thoroughly have fun doing so). And I love art and drawing, of course. However, I do not like working with tools or hands-on stuff as much. I love science, but I hated dissecting things in biology. It was so gross. Similarly, I didn't like chemistry experiments because I didn't want to accidentally stain my clothes or temporarily blind myself (though I did, in fact, love physics experiments — no real danger other than I guess powerful magnets). I did not like woodshop class as I was paranoid the whole time about getting my finger cut off. Etc. I can replace a headlight, but I will hate it, and I absolutely cannot change a car tire, nor do I want to invest the time in learning that when I could be doing math instead. Just call AAA. I am just not super hands-on.
However, I have found that when I apply my debugging and troubleshooting skills to handy things, sometimes good stuff happens. I was able to fix my broken toilet flusher in this way -- by breaking the problem down into smaller pieces and figuring out that the chain was becoming detached. And it might be too early to say that I've fixed my fan -- and if I haven't, I'll edit this post and go call maintenance. But I've at least temporarily fixed it.
My fan was making this really irritating clicking noise. Sometimes it was quiet, and sometimes it was so loud it would wake me up even with earplugs, a smaller fan, and Alexa playing white noise. I kept putting off dealing with it for multiple weeks.
I messed around with it so much, and I would only fix it temporarily -- like for 10-15 minutes tops. However, yesterday I noticed that it was sitting at an angle. The half-sphere part that enclosed the lightbulb was crooked, one part of it hanging lower down than the other. I pushed the lower part upwards with some force until it was back to normal, and voila -- annoying noise stopped.
In retrospect, I think it started clicking when I was dusting it this one time. I pushed on it too hard. I need to be a lot more careful in the future.
Now let's hope it stays this way. If not, I'm going to call somebody for sure. For now, it's documented here, so hopefully I won't forget.
