Job app plans

I am someone who likes to have a zillion failsafes in place.

Tier 1: The best positions for me to apply for are research within computer graphics for Fortune 500 companies. Stable, high-paying, remote-friendly.

Tier 2: I am also qualified for full-stack web development as well as technical artist positions that are more technical than artistic, such as tools programming. For the former, I am not current with my JavaScript frameworks. If I do the Odin Project, I'll get a review of JavaScript and Rails. If I follow that up with Full Stack Open, I will finally know React, probably just in time for 50 new frameworks to pop up.

I'd rather stay out of web though.

Additionally, other non-web software engineering positions will open up especially if I get AWS certified, etc. I could gun for FAANG, but I don't think I want to. Graphics programming is an option, but I would need some additional projects to beef up my CV. And Leetcode. So much Leetcode.

QA, UI/UX are also at this tier.

Tier 3: Technical artist positions that have a significant art component -- my reel and portfolio need to be improved much more for this. Examples: visual effects artist, simulation artist, hair grooms.

Tier 4: Mobile app development. To get these, I need at least one app on the store.

Tier 5: Cybersecurity, network engineering, sysadmin. My cybersecurity studies and cert sequence could qualify me for entry-level jobs within 3 months at best and it will be highly competitive. In reality I expect I won't be qualified for cybersec until the end of 2024, but I'll try anyway. The other two, well, I plan on doing CCNA and setting up a homelab, so it's a possibility.

Tier 6: PLCs and show programming. This depends on how long it takes me to finish the PLC Dojo. The OSEE will help as well, but that will take at least a few more years to finish. Robotics is also at this level if I do the Northwestern certificate.

Tier 7: Embedded systems. The OSEE will help, as will doing projects with Arduino, Pi, and Arm microcontrollers. I am not currently qualified to apply for these positions, but may be by next August or so.

Or I could try to work for quant firms but I am not really interested in finance. I have the websites bookmarked to help with this though if I decide it is prudent. My love for math could get me pretty far, maybe.

Tier 8: Patreon and art commissions. I don't know how long it'll be before I'm good enough to do this. Indie game dev is here too. Fortune Quest has a soft deadline of December 2024. My liminal pool game will be the next project after that.

At this level I could also do a PhD and live off of a crappy stipend. However, I would likely only do this if I legitimately wanted to be a professor (I don't).

Tier 9: Maybe my novels will take off? I still am definitely gunning hard towards publication, but you can't put all your eggs into this particular basket and expect to be safe and secure. I could apply for technical writing positions too, with CS major + creative writing minor.

Tier 10: Mainframe. I hope I don't have to resort to this, as this field is (supposedly) dying.

Tier 11: Back to tech support and network operations. I enjoy this but the pay and hours suck.

Tier 12: Computer repair. Data center technician?

Tier 13: Back to working at Dad's business. Go back to school for electrical or mechanical engineering.

I don't want to think about anything after this level.
