Common problems with polymath communities

I never cared about being a "polymath"; I just got sick of people telling me that I have too many interests so I search the term when trying to find others who are determined to excel at more than one thing. I am going to do what I want, and I'm going to get good at it. This leads me to polymath communities, but many of them are not good.

Here are some of the problems:

  • Some people are weirdly obsessed with the historical idea of being a polymath, like DaVinci, so they artificially choose a bunch of activities to do so they can "become a polymath". Idk, guess I've never cared about being able to call myself a polymath, it just happened on its own -- I just want to become a great artist, writer, programmer, bug bounty hunter, runner, lifter, theme park designer, gamer, etc., all on their own. I only care about the "polymath" thing because I can shove the label at people who tell me I'm doing too much and I'll apparently never get any good because I'm too spread thin.
  • Some people are not true polymaths but are in fact dabblers (look at the Puttylike website for an example of this). Some of us have 5-10 strong interests and we're trying to get really good at them. That's different than wanting to learn sewing one week, then astrophysics the next week, then football, then cooking, then geology, always scratching the surface and never gaining deep knowledge. Pass.
  • Nothing about being a polymath says you HAVE to be interested in certain things, yet there are pretentious people who insist that you HAVE to do philosophy, math, history, all of the above to be a polymath, because you have to fit perfectly with some historical idea. Nope!
  • Some people keep getting more and more skills to add. As in, instead of choosing their focus areas, they keep accumulating more and more. I guess I don't care about being good at everything -- I'm aware I'm socially awkward and I don't care to be a butterfly; I'm aware I'm not a handyman and I legitimately don't care so I am not going to try to be one. I just have my pursuits that I care about. And I have more than one pursuit so it confuses the Outliers disciples. I disregard everything else not related to my interests, if at all possible.
I think true polymathy should be defined as a genuine interest in 5-10 different areas of skill, and consistently working towards becoming one of the best in each of these areas.

Also, areas of focus are not hobbies. If you're trying to get good, I would call it a pursuit. Walking is a hobby for me. I don't care about being a great walker. Same with kayaking and paddleboarding, I like to go on the lake or the harbor but idgaf about getting good. Whereas with writing? I'm going to publish or die trying. Not a hobby. Pursuit.
