My lucid dreaming reality check process

  • First, check a clock. Phone or Apple Watch. Make sure the numbers are consistent.
  • Check my hand. Make sure I have 5 fingers and that they aren’t hazy or blurry.
  • Try to push my hands through each other and see if they’re solid or not.
  • Stomp (surreptitiously, of course, I don’t want to weird people out) into the ground and see if I can fly.
  • Ask myself consciously: am I dreaming? Make a definitive conclusion.
I use the How to Lucid app to remind myself to RC every two hours. It sends push notifications to my Apple Watch. If I think about LDing at any other point during the day, I just do an RC right then and there.

This method works pretty well to attain lucidity. It’s funny because I rarely actually employ this entire process in my dreams; my subconscious forgets it a lot. It’s more the state of continually asking yourself “am I in a dream?” and really thinking about it that makes you lucid. That habit is the important one. It’s what sticks.

A common misconception is that you have to be super present and mindful of external reality to do proper reality checks. I very much disagree. I daydream constantly and often overlay items and characters from my daydreams onto this external objective reality, and it has not affected my ability to LD. It is certainly helpful to only focus on your objective CR when you RC (lol, say that ten times fast), but an RC usually takes less than 2 minutes. After that, daydream all you want.

Next I need to make my LDs last longer and work on demanding clarity, something that I’ve struggled with in the past (especially the latter). Additionally, I need full conscious control over my dream environments so I can go wherever I want to.

I have also experienced a few very close calls with reality shifting (intent method) and one (1) brief astral projection. Each night I set an intent to LD when I’m asleep and shift when I wake up. On average I wake up 2-5 times a night naturally and as such, I have many opportunities to reaffirm my intentions.

I am also occasionally able to get lucid during my hypnagogic imagery. However, launching directly into a WILD using lucid hypnagogia has proven to be challenging. It’s very easy to just accidentally wake myself up instead, since I’m still pretty tied to my physical desires, such as needing to get a drink of water, use the restroom, or blow my nose (allergies).
