Do you feel love?  I know I don't  With no one to hold Do you feel love, love, love? link Obsessed with this song lately.

what sort of medieval torture is this

8 PM on a Sunday, working, no defined end point. Could be done in 20 minutes, could be in 4 hours. Still bugs being found. No CI/CD. No blue-green deployments. No QA. No automated tests. Nothing. Writing code in a language with no else-if statements, no classes, no abstraction, no dependency injection, no separation of concerns, no DRY, code duplication everywhere by design, certain library functions not allowing anything other than hardcoded strings (i.e. can't use a variable). It doesn't even feel like software engineering. It feels like some weird form of torture. My back hurts. We've been working every 2-4 Sundays for the past 18 months.  And we have to work again in 12 hours! Can't be late or else!  And we don't get to get off early anymore as thanks for working the weekend, either.  Arcade is not a programming language. It is a torture chamber.  We may not have to deploy for an entire month  before working a Saturday (oh boy) for a major prod upgrade which...

not really interested in atheism as a concept

The idea of no life after death is actually pretty terrifying to me? So I'll always be invested in some form of theism.  My brother is very atheist. He doesn't get this perspective at all. I'd rather believe in magic than stare at the ceiling every night with a deep-seated fear of infinite nothingness and black. And it feels right to me, too, that we were meant for far more than just this dismal life.  However, my beliefs diverge quite a bit from what they "should" be. For example, I believe all love is eternal, not just heterosexual relationships. I think people -- especially in my current ward -- worry way too much about "sinning" and not enough about the flip side, doing good to others. I think half of Utah, or at least the last few wards I've been in, needs to take a major chill pill. If you seriously think people who whack the walrus aren't going to the top tier of heaven, I've got some bad news for you. If that's true, there are onl...

"I don't feel SAFE with only a lap bar on a coaster!"

Image
Well I do. The physics checks out.  And I'll hang my arms every time Cannibal goes into the Lagoon roll over the waterfall, too.  It's the same as the "I don't feel safe on carnival rides because THEY TAKE THEM APART A LOT! AAAA" okay but stop advocating for them to be taken away for those of us who actually understand safety standards?  (Or the "zomg final destination!!!!!!1" crowd when Siren's Curse was opened.) Let me have my Cannibal and Velocicoaster, please.

What is the general sequence of each day?

It's pretty standard at this point, but let's regroup:  1. Morning COAST studies: Theme park news/communities and research, theme park blogging, mathematics/physics, current PLC or engineering course, current embedded systems course, designing my ultimate theme park resort, zoo research and communities (usually lurking on Zoo Chat; I need to sign up there).  2. LIFTING (stretching/mobility if rest day) 3. RUNNING: baseline 8 miles (take a walk if rest day) 4. Morning CYBER studies: Ethical Hacking University, Hack Forums, General practical/hands-on hardware studies (Dell Certs/PC upgrades), CompTIA Certs, Flipper Zero, Ethical Hacking book / Homelabbing 5. Language studies 6. Musical instruments: Clarinet, piano, voice  7. ART studies: Drawing, 2D digital, 3D digital  8. READING and WRITING 9. Imagination . If I need a break, I take it here, and go out for a theme park activity (water slides, Cornbelly's, etc. if midweek. Lagoon is more likely if it's a weekend or cl...

Happy light time.

It's the autumn equinox today. I have started to feel the quiet and gradual effects of SAD as the descent begins, mostly just a quiet fatigue, and slight melancholy. And so, here we go again.  It was a good summer overall. I didn't need to turn it on after around early May I'd say.  It's time to force my brain to produce the Serotonin and the Dopamine every day until May.  I keep holding on to what I want to believe  I can see But I keep holding on, and on, and on, and on, and on - NIN

I didn't need a third plush snake. But, sometimes you see a stuffed animal and it just looks so lonely and sad, and you want to take it home. We were at Hogle Zoo and I wasn't gonna buy anything more than a keychain and he was $27 and, and, and -- He has been clorox-disinfected and de-tagged. He's a Wild Republic Burmese Python. And he is now mine.  Now Kaa will join the gigantic plush army on my bed. He will have lots of friends and fun adventures in my room (which I really need to clean). It isn't up to my standards of cleanliness, but my room has always been designed to be a window into other worlds (hence all the fantasy/sci-fi/horror and Pokemon and Helluva Boss art), a bit of theme parks, gamer aesthetic, and a bit of neverending childhood, to boot. Legos, plushes, Hot Wheels.  And yeah, the real Kaa is technically a reticulated python. 🤓☝️ I know a lot of people are scared of snakes, but I've never thought them anything other than cute. (spiders, on the othe...

Lagoon season extended? :o

Looks like Frightmares goes until the second week of Nov now! Awesome! So that'll be one less week of theme park drought. Lagoon continues to be fantastic.

I love Coursera discussions

r/HybridAthlete is wimpy

Granted maybe they're all more ripped than I am, but I am working on it. :p  It's not going to kill you to run 6 days a week and lift 6 days a week. It's not going to kill you to run the day after leg day. Or the day of. Or right after lifting without a long break in between (I take maybe a 5-minute break and then just go straight into my run). And it's not going to kill you to lift before a long run. I've never had issues with any of that as long as I do my nightly, 15-minute injury prevention routine while watching cartoons. I've been doing this for years, no issues. I do not have superior genetics in any form. I was the slow kid in high school XC. I used to get injured all the time until I added in the nightly prevention routine.  And no, tracking your macros isn't hard either. It's actually way easier than trying to "just eat clean braaaaaaah."  I'm not sure how this take is revolutionary. This training schedule is not difficult to do, ...

how to make yourself waddle like a penguin: Revel Big Cottonwood Half Marathon Race Report

Image
We love Revel around here. A few notes:  The fact that LetsRun and r/AdvancedRunning and r/running hate Revel because "using gravity to run fast downhill is cheating" is even more reason to love Revel. Saying that gravity is cheating is about as rational as saying that breathing is cheating. I would strongly recommend that we all run Revel in order to spite the elitists. I assume they are all from Nebraska or Kansas or something.  I like trees. there are a lot of them in the canyon It doesn't count for breaking world records -- OK, but no one in that race is going to be breaking world records. Let me have my 1:20 half, Kevin.  ** I PRed by 3 minutes in the half marathon, AND by 9 seconds in the mile, and I only paid for it in the toilet for about 25 minutes and DIDN'T pass out at mile 7 -- I just got really close! ** Week before: I wasn't planning on tapering (I don't like tapering for halfs) but I had to because of some wicked cramping earlier in the week. To...

picture a Sunday night.

picture a Sunday night laying in bed, surrounded by fresh, clean sheets. The air conditioner is humming and it smells like detergent and shampoo from an evening shower.  I'm reading an art book and an electrical engineering book. When I read the art book, I think about the Patreon I'll launch soon. I analyze the technique in the digital brushstrokes, and lose myself in the imagination of the fantasy worlds the artist painted. When I read the engineering book, I learn about circuit analysis and the behavior of electrons.  I check the clock. 8:45 PM. It will be lights-out soon, to make sure I'm well-rested for tomorrow. My novels are progressing nicely, and I know I'll be able to start submitting my work to agents soon. I am working through my gaming backlog. I work on personal projects and Leetcode every night, but for fun and for the future, not for necessity.  There is no 6 PM deployment that could go until 8 PM or 12 AM or all night. It's just a weird memory of a ...

PR drop

1:20:37 at Big Cottonwood Half PR at mile 5 also. 5:21 The hardcore running community who says it "doesn't count" because "gravity is cheating broooo" simply fuel my fire to run even more Revel races in the future.
