covizzle ninetizzle

I am vehemently opposed to lockdowns and mask mandates. I cannot believe that our lives were forcibly taken away from us for something so minor, for such a long period of time. Lockdowns destroy mental health. I will never, ever support them, and you cannot change my mind about this. Lockdowns destroyed the quiet, happy little world I had created for myself, and you do not get to take that world away from me. If you try, I will fight you.  And sure, I think it is a good idea to wear a mask when you’re symptomatic. It just shouldn’t be forced. But if everyone is wearing one even if they’re feeling fine, then it encourages a culture of irrational fear and paranoia. Ergo, this is BAD. Most viruses can be transmitted asymptomatically, and no I’m not going to wear a mask outside of a directly medical context UNLESS I am feeling symptoms of something. Otherwise, we will be doing this forever. Masks make me hyperventilate, and I get a headache if I wear one for too long.  However, I ...

Movies

I’ve only seen 2 movies in theaters this year so far, Wonder Woman 2 and A Quiet Place Part 2. I want to do it a lot more. I also want to find a nearby theater that has an arcade attached.  Wonder Woman was great — a few logic holes, but I loved the message. A Quiet Place 2 was a lot of fun, despite never having seen the first one (I will watch it at some point, definitely before the third one comes out). However, it was also a very stressful movie with little time to breathe. As a result, I think 90 minutes was the perfect runtime for it.

4w5 and 5w4: science and art

So enneagram theory IS pseudoscience, and has an uncomfortably large overlap with people who think that astrology is actually legitimate. However, reading the 4w5 descriptions as a high school senior / college freshman lent itself to such painful accuracy for me that I realized that there was probably much more to this theory than what was on the surface. As Owl City says, "life is quite surreal", and I wouldn't believe in God or soulmates or life on other planets if I took everything at face value. So, I study enneagram theory anyway, woo and all. Honestly, if it helps you (and it will), who cares.  So, 4w5 and 5w4.  People act like these two types are totally different, and as such, conducting a Google search on their differences gives you overtly simplistic explanations (4w5s are more EMOTIONAL and 5w4s are more INTELLECTUAL, no freaking shiz, Sherlock), or random crap like "if you identify with both, you're probably a 6 or a 9", which makes absolutely no...

Coding lessons of the week...

One I solved today had to do with yet another UI fix in Vue...It was a header that was persistently sticky, and I was instructed by the UX designer to make it nonsticky. It took me down a lot of weird paths, including getting lost in the weeds of a bunch of ERB files that I don't think are actually used anywhere in our codebase.  But then I finally found it. Inside of the v-app-bar attribute, there were a few attributes: color="primary", app, and flat.  After stumbling upon  this link , I found that I simply had to remove the app attribute, and the header stopped being affixed to the top of the page. While further testing will be required to see if this doesn't break anything else, ultimately I was surprised at how simply the fix was! And how simple it can be to just add it right back...

Carnivile, my horror WIP: Current chapter summaries

Carnivile  is my current novel project, which I started in January 2019. It is the story of a girl who gets lost in a demonic carnival. It is a story of lost childhood, of escapism, of romance, of rescue, of remembering who you truly are.  It was loosely inspired by the horrorcore band Insane Clown Posse and their Dark Carnival, Tom Wood's fantasy and horror art, various gothic, nu, and extreme metal songs (Bloodbath, Gnaw Their Tongues, Avatar, Behemoth, Cradle of Filth, Chelsea Grin, Evanescence, Nightwish, Korn, WitchcrafT, The Lust, Eluveitie, Moonspell, Amberian Dawn...), other horrorcore artists (Twiztid, Geto Boys, Gravediggaz, Eminem), my childhood games of "Spooky Island", the song "Carnival of Rust" by Poets of the Fall, my lifelong passion for theme parks and carnivals, various nightmares that I have had (including one I call "The Choir"...more on that later) and the general cultural trope of a wicked carnival.  Stylistically, I have been in...

Making sharp / square corners in Vuetify buttons (v-btn)

Another one of those things that I'm saving for future reference.  The main page on Vuetify buttons pretty clearly shows that their buttons have a slight rounding by default. But, there aren't any instructions on how to sharpen the corners. And internet searches seem to be full of people who want to know how to make their buttons even more rounded, even though that's already explained on the page.  So here are the steps!  1) Apply a CSS class to your v-btn 2) Add the following attribute to the CSS class:  border-radius : 0 !important ; You don't need any other border-based attributes. With that, it should work.

Bad systems administration: TEA's user management

TEA meaning the Themed Entertainment Association, or the main website for those in the theme park industry and related industries. It has nothing to do with the Tea Party, which I know virtually nothing about.  The theme park industry is notoriously bad in their web design and software management -- many websites aren't using HTTPS, forums are riddled with spambots, passwords are stored in plaintext, and the like. Unfortunately, this is what happens when you have bad pay and work-life balance (in most cases -- I hope to find a theme park design company that prioritizes good pay and WLB) for a career path, software engineering, that is normally lucrative, secure, and balanced. Your talent floods elsewhere, as I have currently done. So, I guess I should have expected something like this.  I forgot to pay my membership fee last year, and I was tired of hearing about COVID 24/7 (not that there was much else to talk about), so I let my membership expire. But I wanted to reinstate t...
