Levels of Magic in the Reality Network

This is taken from my paracosm that I have been creating and visiting since I was at least 4 or 5 (can't remember, but my earliest memories include it). My paracosm specifically is technically one universe (Alexandria) but there are an infinite number of universes (called Realities) that are all interconnected, which extend beyond that universe. This is the magic that drives them.

Here are the levels. At some future point I might explain more of the details of qii manipulation (pronounced qwee; name subject to change as I'm not currently anywhere near to being published).

Level 1: Low-magic. Someone with only one or two activated qii in their entire body. Everybody has at least one activated qii, but those with too low of magic usually thrive in Dystopian worlds. They can technically ascend to the higher levels, but generally don’t want to, as magic doesn’t generally interest them. Extremely common in Dystopias. Usually cast out of Magical and Haunted Realities.

Spells: An extremely faint, fleeting, subconscious influencing of the qii when defending themselves or people that they love. Even this is extremely rare.

Level 2: Part-magic. Someone who has a tiny amount of activated qii in their body or spirit — 3 to 100. Theoretically can ascend to higher levels, but rarely do, although they are more likely to than a low-magic. They can thrive in Dystopian or Magical Realities. Some people on the higher end actually prefer Magical Realities, such as Tyler (a character from the novel currently referred to as Unrequited, which is on temporary hiatus but will be picked up again eventually), and end up becoming normal magicians — no longer concerned with their humble roots. Tyler is actually the first instance of a part-magic going to a Magical Reality, changing history as they decide to start Rescuing higher Part-Magics as well.

Spells: A “burst of pure magic”, where you can summon the qii but then it dissipates in a burst of oolqons (the "lights of the qii", as described by Parker from Carnivile). Usually does nothing, but can sometimes cause harm or healing. Even this is extremely rare, and only when defending someone they truly care about.

QIILINK/QIISIGH: SMALL TO MEDIUM OBJECTS

Level 3: Base. Someone who has inherent magical ability, but has not yet unlocked the ability to use that power. This is usually babies, small children, and people who have been recently Rescued (due to their magic being suppressed).

This is the highest level that you will see in Dystopian Realities, with a few exceptions of low Rock, as it is not possible to ascend past this without enough activated qii in the environment around you. The worse your depression and longing for another world, the stronger the magic — or mental/physical illness in general. And the feeling of not belonging in the world, which is the second characteristic. Without someone to Rescue you, you will slowly deteriorate. Random assignment causes people to be born into different worlds, and the gods allow it to happen because there is something that you are supposed to learn because of it. Some people, though, are never Rescued. Waiting for the rescuer that will never come…

Spells: Qii attachment (qiilink). Basic manipulation — movement only (qiisigh) — of deactivated qii in very small objects, but on the macro-level. Tiny bursts of wind. Movement of dice to manipulate a roll (which makes card games interesting). Only physical objects, not souls or anything incorporeal.

Level 4: Rock. Children and pre-teens start here, when the goddess Misena grants them magic (as referred to in Autumn's Sky). They can do a few basic spells. Some very strong people in Dystopias are actually Rock, too, but this is extremely rare. Many of these people suffer from extreme physical and/or mental illness if they’re in a world where their magic cannot be expressed.

Spells
: Attachment and basic manipulation. Movement of very small macro objects: books, remote controls, small stones, shrubs and bushes, and the like. Changing colors of small objects.

Level 5: Whynd. Teenagers are here, as well as people who have been in a Magical Reality for a few months/years. After this level, it becomes exponentially more difficult to achieve. The curve keeps going up sharply.

Spells: Intermediate physical manipulation. Movement of medium-sized objects, such as stuff the size of a fridge or port-a-potty. Levitation of a few centimeters.

Level 6: Scintil. Young adults, as well as advanced teenagers, are here. Many actual adults are here, too — in fact, this is the most common level of magic. Scintil like the scintillating water off the ocean.

Spells: Higher-intermediate physical manipulation. Movement of larger but not that large objects, such as boulders, as well as objects already in motion. You will generally be very safe with a Scintil around to protect you: they can shield you from inclement weather, for example, such as hail, or a rockslide. They cannot, however, stop large avalanches, floods, tornadoes, and tsunamis, or threatening people. Major rainstorms can’t be stopped, but with sustained effort they can stop the drops in a small area for like 20-30 minutes. They can summon objects without getting up, and they can knock things out of people’s hands telepathically. Transfiguration becomes possible here, but often doesn’t go well (i.e. You can turn an apple into a donut, but then it crumbles when you touch it).

QIILINK/QIISIGH: LARGE OBJECTS

Level 7: Auburn. This is the highest level that most adults (with non-magical jobs/hobbies) achieve. Auburn is the second most common type of magician, after Scintil.

Spells: Movement of significantly larger objects, such as houses and small hotels. They can tear up/build yards and parks pretty easily. Controlling of slightly larger weather events, but not, say, Augenstorms (and usually they’re told to not interfere even with said weather events, to preserve the natural climate). Checks and balances in magic is what prevents these people from taking over. However, only movement of qii on the macro level is possible even for them! Mastery of transfiguration, except for other living/sentient beings. You can transfigure yourself for a disguise, too.

Superpowers are independent of magic level, but most who have a superpower — regardless of age — are at this level. Flying without machines becomes possible at the high end of this level.

Level 8: Blust. Magicians who have dedicated their entire lives to magic are here. Extremely dedicated, advanced hobbyists are too. They can move almost anything that isn’t mountain-sized or higher. They have the ability to change the weather at will, and stop meteors from hitting the planet. A small-scale alien invasion could be thwarted by a large amount of these magicians forcing the UFOs to stop in their tracks; however, they cannot construct shields.

Spells: Basic potions. Extreme control over weather events and extraterrestrial bodies (such as small meteors). Powerful counterspells that nullify the potency of other spells.

QIIBIRTH, QIILINK/QIISIGH: MICRO LEVEL

Level 9: Gale. Brilliant and hardworking scientists, engineers, doctors, and wizards are here. Highest level where you have a small but not minuscule probability of knowing someone of this caliber.

Spells: This is at the level where basic creation of qii is possible, if you have the knowledge of how a thing works anyway. So you can create your own food — or vital organs. Smaller, quasi-micro manipulation is possible here too, like causing blood to turn into a scab, or stopping it from flowing out of a person. Moving mountains is actually possible now. Shields. You can save people from illnesses or release plagues.

Also: Portals and telekinesis. Telekinesis of other people generally isn’t possible at this level, unless they have low levels of resistance (Rock or lower). Portals are possible because you are tearing holes in between different realities, and while they’re not technically large, it’s a long distance. Selene is here. She could telekinect Parker back when his level was Rock.

QIIDEATH, QIISIGH FOR ACTIVATED QII

Level 10: Dymin. Sorcerers start here, as well as witches/dark wizards and enthusiasts of the Aumbentude. It is impossible to communicate with the demonic realm or powers of darkness before this level, because demonic powers contain higher amounts of activated qii. The Aumbentude is said to be harder to start working with than the Bealletude, but the Bealletude has more infinite power. Pretty dang uncommon, but not rare.

Spells: Don’t mess around with these people. Moving activated qii becomes possible here, which makes it possible for them to cause real damage to other people and animals. Mind manipulation (not control). Moving actual planets off their orbits. Building medium-sized objects. Basic destruction of qii — small objects — becomes possible here, too. Raven is here. Qii manipulation on a micro level begins to become possible here. Telekinesis of other people. Telepathy.

QIIMELD/QIIYANK

Level 11: Ace. Skilled sorcerers and battle masters. Uncommon to rare. Many dragons are here.

Spells: Everything below, plus more. For a few seconds, they can turn the sun off. Mind control is doable, but hard to sustain for prolonged periods. Teleportation, hypnosis, love potions, emotional manipulation, brilliant trickery. Never lose games of strategy and can manipulate the outcome of games of chance. They can influence the rotations of entire solar systems slightly, and extinguish stars if only for a short while. Qiimeld and qiiyank are just barely possible here, as well as the creation and destruction of medium objects.

QIIBIRTH/QIIDEATH

Level 12: Tetrak. If you are this good, you’re one of the 5 most powerful people in your galaxy/cluster. An examination, evaluated by judges as well as the gods themselves, is the only way you can make it up to this level. HUGE gatekeeper. The bell curve drops very sharply from here on out.

Spells: Creation and destruction of large objects, up to the size of mountains. They can actually move planets and solar systems permanently, and extinguish stars for a few minutes — enough to destroy entire populations. Qiibirth and qiideath are possible for large objects, but you can only create deactivated qii.

Level 13: Song. Extremely powerful sorcerers who have worked for millennia to get to this level. The dark wizard Selar from Autumn's Sky is an example.

Spells: Qiibirth and qiideath are possible for almost anything. Manipulation of activated qii is extremely strong. This is where most of the Servetors are, and the ice queen from Akea. Love potions and intense emotions. They can destroy planets or worlds if they want to, or bend large amounts of people to their will. Mind control. Traveling between earthy and celestial plane is difficult, but doable. Time travel is possible, but it’s very buggy and unreliable and you can’t go far.

Level 14: Skye/Sigil. The first level of demi-godhood/demonhood. Official ascension. This is where the practitioners of dark magic begin to vary (due to Aumbentude vs. Belleatude) extremely, hence the different names. It is extremely difficult to get past this level without divine intervention or taking qii forcefully from others, or working for an extreme length of time — multiple millennia. The Ringmaster is here. Minor gods, regional deities, demons. Extremely advanced mortals and powerful sorcerers. Ghosts who have not left this world are often at this level, due to extreme amounts of time practicing as they wander the worlds. No matter what area of magic you specialize in, if you get powerful enough, you are a Skye. The bionic warriors of that desert-and-jungle-and-dunes-and-red-cliffs planet, from my one untitled short story which I will return to at some point, are often Skye or Song. These are demigods. And there is an enormous threshold between Skye and Song (hence a large amount of variability in the bionic warriors).

Spells: Traveling between the earthly and celestial plane is trivial (the barrier is made of activated qii). Master or mistress of multiple realities. With a Soulmate, infinitely increasing, indescribable love. Still not super great time travel.

QIISPARK/QIIFADE

Level 15: Shimmer/Bloodsigh. Less pure, but powerful gods. Plenty of imperfection and corruption here. An indifference or contempt for the lives of mortals, or in the reverse caring deeply for them and meddling in their lives (against the rules). The part-creators of Alexandria are here. Highest demigods. Guardian angels. HIGHEST DEMIGODS.

Spells: Can create anything at will. Very little effort required as the qii almost bend to your will automatically here. Quasi-immortality, almost qii-replenish, starts here — if they go through death, it will be largely indiscernible, as they can flip between each realm easily. Demons at this level are truly terrifying. Resurrection, or the re-activation of qii, (qiispark) or deactivation of qii (magical murder or destruction of souls) begins to become possible here. Sub-qiilife is here, where your qii replenish themselves at an extremely high rate but not quite infinite. Quasi-perfect time travel.

Level 16: Sunlight/Moonscream. Noblest of deities. More powerful guardian angels. All true gods/high demons are at this level or higher.

Spells: Life becomes a toy. Resurrection and murder are instantaneous and effortless. For the less kind gods, mortals are like ants. Others see much more compassion. Qiilife is almost achievable here — a higher rate than Shimmer. Perfect time travel, but usually forbidden to do so.

QIILIFE

Level 17: Supremacy. Only the Great God has achieved this. This is true omnipotence.

Spells: Everything, including complete control over everyone and everything in all the Realities (though this will not ever be used, as a result of the inherent agency granted to all sapient beings). Ability to harness Romantic magic, and esoteric forces such as the Aumbentude and Belleatude = complete control over them. Qiilife.

Level 18: Absolute. Gods higher than the Great God.

Spells: Things that we cannot actually imagine happening. At this point, it is impossible for the non-deity brain to conceive or comprehend what these things are. But the Great God is for us to honor.
