Wrong, Mr. Young.

This excerpt from Scott Young's email list contains a falsehood (or two or three):

1. No.
2. I hate how the world doesn't value human expression, only what can rake in the most $$$.

As always, I am not strictly anti-AI; we just used it in a pair programming session this morning at work. I am a ChatGPT, Copilot, and Claude user. However, regardless of whether or not these skills that Scott mentions are going to be devalued by sociopathic business bros, that doesn't change the fact that you need basic skills in those areas if you are going to become advanced, because that's how getting better works. Yes, ChatGPT can write me some Excel macros, but if I am going to code an Excel competitor, I had damn well better know how macros work.

Also, vibe coders need to go away. I thought that was a meme that nobody actually took seriously, but I was wrong. You people don't belong in any tech major. Yes, I am going to gatekeep that until I'm dead in the ground.

Oh OK, yeah, Scott is basically saying the same thing now. Fine. I'll allow it. Reluctantly. :V

But to call AI's illustration skills superhuman is really, you know. Wrong.

Who genuinely believes that AI is good at illustration? It's far better than me, but it's hardly good. Case in point: I use Crafting Table for their nice Arduino tutorials. Their obvious AI art is horrendous and their characters do not even look the same across various shots in the same video. The walk cycles on the human characters are bizarre-looking and unnatural.

For now I'll just keep being old and pretend that I'm in 2010 back when DeviantArt was actually cool and not...whatever is going on there now. I was using Inkblot, but that site is so buggy and there isn't even a dev position open for me to try and fix it. I think I might switch over fully to Cara. It's like ArtStation but with no AI slop. Yes, it's 2010 and internet forums are king and lolcats are everywhere and everything is peachy. Lalalala, no time has passed, I can't hear you.

Scott is a great writer and I really enjoy his productivity tips, as well as his optimization on learning. But, that doesn't mean he is right about everything.
