6 hours and only 6 Lagoon rides?
Just saw this in a FB comment. That's really unfortunate for the family who experienced this. I usually go to Lagoon on the most crowded day of the week, Saturday, and I'm almost certain that I could beat that even in the middle of July (but maybe not October. People LOVE the Halloween/Frightmares post season)
Like the general principles are pretty easy. GRANTED I usually do Lagoon solo and these strategies are going to be harder to execute with a group that consists of anyone other than extremely energetic teens and adults.
- Rope drop and speed-walk and you can have all the coasters plus Samurai and both sides of Rocket done by 1-2 pm.
- In order to rope drop, you will need to get there no later than 9:45 AM and the closer you cut it, the faster you are going to have to walk.
- Potential order: Primordial (skip if there's even a single breakdown or if you don't get there at literal rope drop, like you actually see the rope fall and almost get trampled by a bunch of small children), Cannibal, Rocket Re-Entry, Rocket Blastoff, Samurai, Roller Coaster, Wicked, Spider, Wild Mouse, Bat, Bombora, Colossus
- this order doesn't matter THAT much -- it's just nice to do everything around Cannibal first, then book it to the other end of the park, then go back to the center for the tamer coasters
- If you don't care as much about flats, you can just eat the lines for Samurai and Rocket later, but the line for Rocket Re-Entry really, really, really sucks after lunch. like it's going to be 45 minutes
- I'm not sure when to do Jet Star 2. I don't like riding that one because the bobsled-style positioning is really uncomfortable with family members, let alone friends or strangers. My family doesn't like it either, so I haven't been on it since 2015. I don't think they even let you ride solo, but I have never tried.
- If you want to ride Puff, probably do it in the late evening with the rest of the kiddie rides. NGL, I only rode that once to get the credit so I am not the best person to consult about that. I went later in the afternoon I think, or possibly early evening, and the line was annoying.
- Do Colussus last for coasters. It rarely has a wait due to efficient loading (thank you to our dear lord and savior Anton) ESPECIALLY if you see multi-train ops. Haven't waited much more than 20 minutes for this on slammed midsummer Saturdays
- If Primordial is broken down, drop the line. Get out. Save yourselves. They won't announce it so just check to see if trains are going and if people are giving up in line.
- If you can't rope drop Prime or it breaks then you'll have to get in line for the last hour of your day. It's gonna take a while and there's nothing you can do because the capacity is so poor.
- Rattlesnake Rapids will get long lines, so just avoid midafternoon. I love this ride, but it's a bit awkward to solo, and lots of people do not like how soaked you get if the waterfall is on and don't want to do it.
- Single rider for Cannibal and Wicked. For the latter, you will likely need to request it from an op.
- Flats and dark rides are going to slow you down no matter what.
- Looking at you: Paratrooper (urgh, love this ride but the waits are some of the worst), Rock-O-Plane, Space Scrambler, Terrorride, Tidal Wave, and sometimes Dracula's Castle
- Tilt-a-Whirl, Jumping Dragon, OdySea, Turn of the Century, Centennial Screamer, and Cliffhanger aren't that bad usually due to the high capacity (or the WEAK with motion sickness avoiding Tilt-A-Whirl, but not Space Scrambler for some reason)
- However, it can get really hot waiting for Centennial. No shade in that area.
- Sky Ride is a toss-up but usually fine due to continuous loading
- I don't generally do bumper cars but I think they're fine
- Can't do the ferris wheel as a single rider so idk, but it can get a long line around sunset. Btw when you go on this you can actually spin the gondola around like it's a teacup. Absolutely terrifying.
- the Express train is usually fine but that station wait is extremely sweaty in the summer. It's like a hotbox in there.
- Musik Express is fine, always.
- This one is a lot more fun at night. It still hurts though. 😖
- 2 pm - 4 pm is slow in general. Sometimes I just give up, leave, and drive 6 minutes to Cherry Hill Water Park instead (but that's a great way to have to endure 40-minute lines for Double Dragons and zero unused tubes in Grant's Gulch).
- Merry-go-round should be fine whenever. I love doing it at night with all the lights and a cool breeze blowing in from over the water.
- Do kiddie rides last if you're going to do them (8 pm or later) because most people will be gone by then.
- Kiddie rides that I personally find worth it: Puff (for the credit), Kontiki, Dragonfly, the mini drop towers, Jumping Dragon (probably the best kiddie ride in the park!), and the Tipsey Tea Cups.
- And Engine 86 but only if you like crazy buses and being cramped (I am 5'9" and felt cramped, though my 6' something friend did manage to squeeze in -- barely)
- After finishing these I like to do another round of coasters, but that's totally personal preference. I have never done Prime more than once in a day.
- Lagoon a beach should either be rope dropped, started before 11:30 am (and you'd better hustle because the lines are wicked by 12:30 for everything except maybe Outrigger and IF you're lucky the Twist and Shout slide tower), or visited at 4 pm (may start out pretty crowded if you do that, but it SHOULD thin out)
- Nobody asked but I love doing Bombora right before LAB opens because you can look out at the water park as they're getting it ready, and get all excited :) Does not apply if both the dry park and the water park open at the same time. This depends on the year IME.
- Also you should get out of the lazy river and Blue Lagoon swimming pool before around 1:30-2 pm unless you like playing footsies with 250 of your new closest friends. Or get in after 4:30-5ish.
- Either eat lunch at 11 am or 2 pm but do realize that the subway and Arbys may not be open if you don't fit it into the 11-2 block. And the place near the tiger arcade (I think Carousel Burger?) isn't that bad if you don't want to wait crazy long and you're getting food during lunch rush. It still won't be fast tho. The fries there are amazing (I get them all the time) and the fries at the LAB (Lagoon a beach) are nasty.
- like how do you make French fries without actually, you know, frying them? what should we call those? peeled potatoes? just French?
- If you eat at 11 and are still trying to take advantage of rope drop, just walk with your food to your next ride. Obviously you can't eat it on the ride but you can finish it on the way over. If you get motion sickness, I would like to ask: why so weak? :P
- if this looks like too much you are simply not taking enough caffeine. 230mg with another hit of ~60mg in early evening. Trust.
- Best nap spots in Lagoon are the benches near the river by the railroad museum, and the prison in Pioneer Village.
if you want to be even nerdier, here is how I have started referring to stuff in my mind:
- Cannibal: The Can-Can
- Primordial: Prime
- Lagoon-a-Beach: The Lab
I need more stupid nicknames lol.
It's also worth noting that I miss rope drop pretty frequently due to my morning long runs in Provo Canyon, but when I do hit it, this strategy works well. I'm trying to hit it much more often this season without sacrificing any training.
This was kind of a dump of tips for all-day trips, but the same principles apply to half or quarter days. Having a pass and going all the time is awesome because you can drop out of lines whenever you feel like it, just reride stuff repeatedly, play arcade games, go home if you need to get crap done, try and ride EVERY SINGLE RIDE IN THE PARK LOL ELON MUSK HARDCORE GAMER, walk along the Lagoon trail until you are lost somewhere in the Farmington mountains, pee every 30 minutes when it's 95F outside without annoying anyone...you know the drill.
